Education & Innovation

Education is a core component of CA3D+’s mission. We have undertaken several projects to enhance education for the next generation of clinicians, surgeons, researchers and affiliated specialists. In some cases, the technologies and teaching methods shown here are both novel and unique to CA3D+.

CHiL3D

Congenital Heart Library using 3D+ Technologies. Using 3D scanning and micro-CT to develop a digital pathology library of congenital heart disease. PI: Anita Moon-Grady, Shafkat Anwar. Collaborators: Michael Bunker, Derek Harmon, Youngho Seo.

Heart Education Using Augmented Reality

Collaboration between Jesse Courtier, Michael Bunker and Shafkat Anwar, using “holographic” 3D models in augmented reality on the Sira app to teach medical students, residents, fellows, patients and caregivers about congenital heart disease.

Deep Explore Project

Derek Ponce, MD, PhD, joined us for a Deep Explore project during his fourth year of medical school. The study investigates the clinical impact of 3D printing on congenital heart surgeries, and won the Dean’s Award from the School of Medicine.

3D-printed anatomically correct human heart

Dr. Brian Dang (center), the inaugural resident for our 3D+ clinical rotation, mentored by Shafkat Anwar and Michael Bunker, learned the clinical applications and techniques of 3D modeling and printing. By the end of his rotation, he successfully designed and 3D-printed an anatomically correct human heart.

The Sling Health team

Minh Nguyen (second from left) and the Sling Health team collaborated with CA3D+ to automate data collection to assess the clinical impact of 3D+ technologies. The Sling Health team is composed of Nguyen, Michael Reitman and Charlene Pan, medical and PhD students from the UCSF School of Medicine and UC Berkeley. Dr. Aenor Sawyer is the Sling Health advisor, and Dr. Shafkat Anwar is the project mentor. Michael Bunker (second from right) is the project manager from CA3D+.
